Prepared Piano

m &r was written for Amy Williams as a part of the New Music on the Point summer music program. It was a unique opportunity to write for a virtuostic musician, and also get the chance to explore John Cage's original preparations. The first movement m is short, quiet, and reflective, while the second movement &r is light hearted and has a quick pace, making use of a wonky, constantly shifting, tempo.

Undefined Instrumentation

interpretive puzzle was inspired by chapter 6 of Douglas Hofstader's book Gödel Escher Bach. It explores some of the questions and hypothetical scenarios presented in the chapter about the location and nature of meaning, which are also core themes of the book. It is also about the composer/performer relationship and the act of interpreting a musical score.

Two Snare Drums + Electronics

Ennui is defined as: listlessness and dissatisfaction resulting from lack of interest; boredom. While composing the piece, I was working through my own sense of ennui. The piece develops from nothing, slowly evolving, exploring what is to be found there.

Vibraphone + Synthesizer or Fixed Media

Composed in the summer of 2021, Onri is a solo or duo for vibraphone and synthesizer. Throughout the piece, abrupt shifts in speed punctuate a sea of sixteenth notes. Coupled with precisely tuned sine tones, the synth subtly mixes and warps the vibraphones tuning. A subtle beating is produced, contrasting the gear shifting rhythm of the vibraphone.

Violin + Glockenspiel

A continuation of my ongoing rhythmic experiments, Lucent explores a continuously oscillating rhythm. From the constant compressing and expanding pulse, a delicate swaying effect is produced. The swaying rhythmic pad of the violin combines with the bright sounds of the glockenspiel, to make a shimmering, shining, and glassy texture.

Keyboard Trio

Refract is my first exploration of a different kind of rhythmic feel. I imagined the rhythm as a beam of light that passes through different “rhythmic fields”. Each field causing the beam to refract in a different way. Using time signatures that aren’t groupings of two, allowed the pulse to become fluid, while still retaining the rigidity of the measure. Refract should be performed on three of the same type of keyboard instrument. Sound design by Brian Morones.

String Quartet

Syzygy: the nearly straight-line configuration of three celestial bodies (such as the sun, moon, and earth during a solar or lunar eclipse). In Syzygy, the string quartet alternates between two states. The rhythmic cacophony of unrelated individuals, and sudden, abrupt syzygies.
